How Jutland Was Fought

Reproduction of a 1936 map created by Edwin Sundberg detailing the main events that took place in the historic sea battle. The map illustrates the course of British and German boats

The Battle of Jutland (31 May - 1 June 1916) was the largest naval battle of the First World War. Jutland was a confused and bloody action involving 250 ships and around 100,000 men. Initial encounters between Beatty's force and the German High Seas Fleet resulted in the loss of several ships. Jutland was the last major battle in world history fought primarily by battleships. Germany's High Seas Fleet intended to lure out, trap, and destroy a portion of the Grand Fleet, as the German naval force was insufficient to openly engage the entire British fleet.
