The topography and geography of many regions in England are intertwined with local folklore, often involving mythical creatures such as giants. The area surrounding Whitby is no exception, with the legend of the Giant Wade used to explain the existence of local hills, standing stones, and natural amphitheaters.
According to the tales passed down through generations, Wade's Causeway (also known as Old Wife's Way) is an ancient road that runs from Malton to Eskdale and was built by the giant Wade for his giantess wife Bell. The purpose of the road was to provide a way for Bell to take her cow onto the moors for milking.
One version of the story claims that while constructing the road, Wade required additional earth and soil. So, he scooped up the ground with his hand, which resulted in the formation of the mile-long bowl-shaped valley known as the Hole of Horcum.
Upon completing the highway, Wade found that he had some excess earth, which he flung away onto the moors. Depending on which version of the legend you hear, this act resulted in the creation of Blakey Topping, Roseberry Topping, or Freeborough Hill.
While some historians credit the Romans with building Wade's Causeway, the local folklore asserts that it was the work of the giant Wade himself. Regardless of the true origin of the ancient road, the legend of Wade and his deeds lives on in the folklore of North Yorkshire, inspiring generations to imagine and explore the region's stunning landscape.
